Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling the house?+

My AC coil keeps freezing into a block of ice. What's wrong?+
Freezing means the evaporator is getting too cold for the air moving across it — nearly always low airflow or low refrigerant charge. Turn the system off and run the fan only to thaw it, replace the filter, then call us. Running a frozen system risks liquid refrigerant reaching the compressor, which is a far more expensive repair.
Is it worth repairing an older R-22 air conditioner?+
Sometimes. If the failure is electrical — capacitor, contactor, fan motor — a repair is usually the sensible choice. If the system has a refrigerant leak, R-22 is expensive and no longer produced, so putting several hundred dollars of gas into a leaking 18-year-old condenser rarely pays.
