HVAC UV Lights in Whitehall, MT

A coil-mounted UV lamp keeps the wet, dark part of your system from growing anything. It is the simplest fix there is for musty startup odors and slimed drain pans.

What UV actually does

Germicidal UV-C light breaks down the DNA of microorganisms that sit in its path. In an HVAC system the useful target is the evaporator coil and drain pan: dark, condensation-soaked surfaces where mold and bacteria establish themselves and then get smelled every time the blower starts.

A coil-mounted lamp irradiates those surfaces continuously, so growth never gets established. That keeps the coil's fins clear, which protects airflow and cooling capacity, and it keeps the pan and drain from sliming up and plugging.

What it does not do

We would rather tell you the limits than oversell. Air passing a lamp at duct velocity is exposed for a fraction of a second, so in-duct UV does far less to airborne particles than the marketing suggests, and it does nothing for dust, pollen or smoke particulate — that is filtration's job.

So we position UV for surface disinfection, where the exposure time is continuous and the benefit is real, and handle particulate with a properly sized filter your blower can breathe through.

Installation and lamp life

The lamp mounts in the coil cabinet or plenum with the tube aimed across the coil face and pan, wired to a dedicated power supply, with a viewport or interlock so nobody looks directly at it. Placement is everything — a lamp aimed at sheet metal instead of the coil is decoration.

UV lamps lose output long before they stop glowing. Most need replacing annually, some at two years, and we note the date at install and change it during your regular maintenance visit rather than leaving you to remember.

Local knowledge

Built for Whitehall and the Jefferson Valley

Our summers are dry, which limits the growth an evaporator coil sees compared to a humid climate — but a coil condensing water in a dark cabinet still stays wet for months, and homes with humidifiers add moisture in winter as well.

Smoke season is the local reminder that UV and filtration are separate tools. UV keeps the coil clean; a good filter keeps particulate out of the air you breathe. We set both up so they work together instead of fighting each other's airflow.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Do HVAC UV lights really work?+

For keeping the evaporator coil and drain pan free of biological growth, yes — that's continuous exposure to a fixed surface. For sterilizing air rushing past at duct speed, the effect is small. We install them for the job they actually do well.

How often does the lamp need replacing?+

Most residential lamps annually, some rated for two years. Output drops well before the lamp goes dark, so we record the install date and swap it during your maintenance visit.

Is UV safe in my ductwork?+

Yes, when installed correctly. The light is fully enclosed inside the duct or cabinet, and we install a viewport or interlock so service work can't expose anyone to direct UV-C.

Will a UV light fix my musty smell?+

If the smell comes from the coil or drain pan, cleaning it and adding UV usually ends it. If it's coming from a wet crawlspace or duct insulation, UV won't help — so we find the source first.
